UN: Invest in farmers to stop growth of -slums

Cities must do more to slow the migration of people from r the countryside to urban slums by investing in farmers and promoting their products. These were the sentiments expressed on the sidelines , of a UN global food security meeting over the weekend. Many cities rely on imports to feed ttteir people, but few have begµn lnvesting in their local farmers, it was said. City authorities were encouraged to h·e1p local producers promote their fruits, vegetables and other products to help them compete with smartly packaged imported goods. Cities could also improve the lot of small farmers by setting up contracts for them to supply urban school canteens.
